Rose
Rosa hybrids
Classic and rewarding once you learn its rhythm: sun, airflow, a deep drink, and a well-timed prune. Modern shrub roses are far tougher than their reputation.
Growing conditions
How to grow it
- 1
Plant in sun with room to breathe
Give roses 6+ hours of sun and space between plants — good airflow is the best defense against the fungal diseases roses are prone to.
- 2
Water deeply at the base
Water at the roots, not the leaves (wet foliage invites disease). to hold moisture and suppress weeds.
- 3
Prune in late winter
while dormant: remove dead and crossing canes and cut back to an outward-facing bud. Pruning removes apical dominance so the bush pushes vigorous new flowering shoots.
- 4
Deadhead through the season
Snip spent blooms just above a healthy leaf set. stops the plant putting energy into hips (seeds) and pushes it to rebloom.
- 5
Feed and watch for pests
in spring and after the first flush. Check for aphids and blackspot; -plant with alliums or marigolds to deter pests.
Gardener's notes
- Stop in late summer to let hips form and signal dormancy before winter.
- A handful of banana peel or adds potassium for better blooms.
