Cheerful and tough, blooming non-stop from a simple sowing. French marigolds grown as a cover crop genuinely suppress root-knot nematodes โ€” though the 'repels all pests' reputation is overstated.

Average, moderately fertile, well-drained soil; tolerates a wide range and even poorer soils. Dislikes soggy, waterlogged ground. Rich, heavily fertilized soil produces lush leaves but fewer flowers. ยท pH 6.0โ€“7.0 (extension consensus; some references give a slightly wider 5.5โ€“7.5). Marigolds are not fussy about pH.
When to sow
Marigolds are frost-tender. Start seed indoors about 4โ€“6 weeks before the last spring frost (start African / T. erecta types ~8 weeks ahead because they're slower). Harden off, then transplant outdoors only after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Direct-sow in the garden at or just after the last frost date.
Spacing
French (T. patula) & Signet (T. tenuifolia): 15โ€“23 cm (6โ€“9 in); they can sit closer to form a low hedge. African/American (T. erecta): 30โ€“46 cm (12โ€“18 in) โ€” at least a foot apart because of their size.

45โ€“100 days from sowing to first bloom (French/Signet ~45โ€“60; large African types ~70โ€“100).
Hardiness
Grown as a warm-season annual in all USDA zones (2โ€“11) after the last spring frost; native to Mexico and Central America, none of the common Tagetes are winter-hardy. A few perennial species (e.g. Lemmon's marigold, T. lemmonii) are hardy only in roughly zones 8โ€“10.

How to grow it

    Sow into warm soil or start indoors

    Marigold seed fast and reliably, so it's a great first seed to grow. Press seed about 0.6 cm (1/4 in) deep and keep the mix evenly moist and warm; it will germinate in roughly 5โ€“7 days. Direct-sow once frost has passed and the soil has warmed, or start seed indoors 4โ€“6 weeks before your last frost (about 8 weeks for tall African types) to get a jump on bloom.

    Harden off and transplant after frost

    Marigolds are tender and a single frost will kill them, so be patient. off indoor-grown seedlings over about a week, then into the garden only once all danger of frost has passed and the soil is warm. Space French and Signet types 15โ€“23 cm (6โ€“9 in) apart and big African types at least 30 cm (12 in) apart so air moves freely between plants.

    Pinch young plants for bushiness

    When seedlings are a few inches tall, out the growing tip of tall and leggy types. That single pinch forces side branches, giving you a fuller, sturdier plant with far more flower buds instead of one tall stem. Compact French and Signet types branch well on their own and need little pinching.

    Water deeply at the base, then ease off

    Water new plants in well and keep the soil evenly moist while they establish. After that, marigolds are fairly drought-tolerant โ€” water but let the surface dry between waterings rather than sprinkling lightly each day. Always water at the soil line, not over the flowers, because wet foliage and water sitting in dense blooms invites disease.

    Go easy on feeding and add mulch

    Marigolds bloom best in average soil and actually flower less when overfed โ€” too much nitrogen gives you a big leafy plant with few flowers. Work a little into the bed at planting and skip heavy . A thin layer of keeps moisture even and weeds down, but keep it off the stems.

    Deadhead for continuous bloom

    This is the single biggest payoff with marigolds. They don't strictly require , but or snipping off faded flowers stops the plant from setting seed and pushes it to keep producing new blooms right up until frost. Remove the whole spent head, not just the petals. If flowering slows in midsummer heat, shear the whole plant back by about a third to spark a fresh flush as weather cools.

    Save seed at season's end

    At the end of the season let a few flowers fully mature and dry on the plant instead of them. The dried heads are packed with long, slim seeds you can rub free and keep. Open- French, African, and Signet types come fairly true from saved seed; triploid hybrids are sterile and won't.

Gardener's notes

  • The nematode reputation is real but conditional: Tagetes (especially French, T. patula) roots release thiophenes like alpha-terthienyl that genuinely suppress root-knot and lesion nematodes โ€” but only when marigolds are grown as a solid stand (a near-monoculture cover crop) for about two months before the crop you want to protect. Scattering a few marigolds among vegetables ('interplanting') does NOT reliably reduce nematodes and can even backfire, because some nematodes still on the marigolds and on the cash crop. Treat marigolds as a rotation cover crop for nematodes, not a sprinkle.
  • The 'marigolds repel insect pests' claim is much weaker than the nematode story. Lab studies show French marigold foliage and extracts can reduce some pests (e.g. whiteflies, tarnished plant bug) and the plants can act as a trap crop for thrips, but garden evidence that a border of marigolds protects your vegetables from flying pests is thin. Grow them for color and and as a possible trap plant โ€” not as a guaranteed pest shield.
  • Overfeeding and overwatering are the usual reasons marigolds underperform: rich soil and excess nitrogen give lush leaves and few flowers, while soggy soil and water sitting in the dense double blooms invite gray mold. Lean soil, deep but infrequent watering, full sun, and steady get you the nonstop bloom marigolds are famous for.

Varieties worth knowing

French marigold (Tagetes patula)
Compact, bushy plants ~15โ€“30 cm (6โ€“12 in) tall with single, semi-double, double, or crested flowers 2.5โ€“5 cm (1โ€“2 in) wide in yellow, orange, red, mahogany, and bicolors. Earliest and longest-blooming; the species with the strongest research support for suppressing root-knot nematodes when grown as a solid cover. E.g. 'Bonanza', 'Durango', 'Janie', 'Strawberry Blonde'.
African / American / Aztec marigold (Tagetes erecta)
Tall (often 30โ€“90 cm / 1โ€“3 ft, some to 1.2 m / 4 ft) with large, mostly double globe-shaped flowers 5โ€“10 cm (2โ€“4 in) across in yellow, orange, and creamy white. Showiest cut flower; needs the widest spacing and benefits from pinching. E.g. 'Crackerjack', 'Inca II', 'Antigua'.
Signet marigold (Tagetes tenuifolia)
Mound-forming with fine, lacy, lemon-scented foliage and masses of tiny single 2.5 cm (1 in) single flowers; edible petals with a citrus note. Great for edging and containers. E.g. 'Lemon Gem', 'Tangerine Gem', 'Starfire'.
Triploid hybrids (T. erecta ร— T. patula)
Sterile F1 hybrids combining big African-type flowers on compact French-type plants ~25โ€“45 cm (10โ€“18 in). Because they set little or no seed they pour energy into nonstop bloom and shrug off summer heat โ€” often the longest-blooming of all. E.g. 'Zenith' series.

Common problems & fixes

Spider mites
Sign: The most common marigold pest, worst in hot, dry weather. Leaves lose their green color and look stippled, dusty, or bronzed; severe infestations show fine webbing over the plant.
Fix: Spray the undersides of leaves with a strong jet of water, and keep plants from getting drought-stressed. For heavier infestations use insecticidal soap or horticultural oil, repeating as directed; avoid broad-spectrum insecticides that kill the mites' natural predators.
Slugs and snails on seedlings
Sign: Young seedlings and transplants chewed, with ragged holes and silvery slime trails, especially in damp, cool, mulched conditions.
Fix: Hand-pick at night, remove damp hiding spots, water in the morning so the surface dries by evening, and use traps or iron-phosphate slug bait around vulnerable seedlings until they're established.
Botrytis / gray mold on dense double flowers
Sign: Fuzzy gray-brown mold rotting the big double African-type flowers and buds, worst in wet weather or where plants are crowded โ€” water collects in the packed petals and the bloom rots.
Fix: Space plants for airflow, water at the base instead of overhead, and promptly deadhead spent and rain-soaked blooms. Remove and discard infected flowers; thinning crowded plantings is the best prevention.
Damping-off of seedlings
Sign: Newly germinated seedlings collapse, pinched and rotted at the soil line, in cold, wet, overcrowded starting conditions.
Fix: Use clean trays and fresh seed-starting mix, sow thinly, provide warmth and good airflow, and avoid overwatering. Let the surface dry slightly between waterings.
Aster yellows
Sign: Distorted, yellowed, stunted growth and oddly greenish, deformed flowers; spread by leafhoppers, not a fungus.
Fix: There's no cure โ€” pull and destroy infected plants promptly so leafhoppers can't spread it, and manage weeds that host the disease. It's uncommon but worth knowing the green, misshapen blooms aren't a watering problem.

Keep apart from
No strong evidence of any vegetable harmed by marigolds โ€” keep them out of soggy, deep-shade spots rather than away from specific crops. Don't rely on a few interplanted marigolds for pest or nematode control (see tips).

Harvest & storage

Harvest
For cut flowers (especially the big African types), cut stems in the cool of early morning once the blooms have nearly fully opened. For seed, leave a few heads on the plant until the flowers brown and dry completely, then pick the whole head. Signet marigold petals can be picked fresh for edible garnish.
Storage
Cut marigold flowers last about a week in a clean vase of fresh water; recut stems and change the water to extend vase life โ€” be aware the foliage has a strong scent some dislike indoors. To save seed, dry the harvested heads fully in a warm, airy spot, rub out the long slender seeds, and store them dry in a labeled envelope or airtight container in a cool, dry place for next season.
